Jamshedpur, also known as Tatanagar, is famous as the oldest planned city in India. It is an industrial base for the Tata Group. Jamshedpur is the only city in India that is leased to a company. Apart from being known as the steel city of India, Jamshedpur is also known as the fountain city for having beautiful fountains around the city.
Jamshedpur earlier was known as Sakchi, and was part of the state of Bihar. In the year 1904, Jamshedji Tata had the vision of constructing India’s first steel plant. After three painstaking years, with the help of geologists from Pittsburgh, a terrain was found which was rich in iron, coal, limestone and water. This area was very near to the town of Sakchi, and thus the foundation of India’s first steel city was laid.
Jamshedpur has 17 small and large parks which add to the aesthetic appeal of the city. The highlight of the city is Jubilee Park spread over 200-acres with landscaped gardens and illuminated fountains. Another park is Sir Dorabji Tata Park which has similar manicured gardens and fountains. Nature lovers can go down to Hudco Lake in Telco colony for a picnic or for a bit of angling. The city is also home to a large sports complex, J.R.D Tata Sports Complex which caters to all types of indoor and outdoor games. The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation offers facilities for para-sailing, kayaking, rock climbing and more. Other places to see include Tata Steel Zoological Park, Dimna Lake and Keenan Stadium. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is a place for wildlife and bird lovers, besides offering great trekking options.
